Previously, the European Union Ecolabel was awarded solely to products such as shampoo, body wash or conditioner but, recently, there were changes in the eligibility criteria to the distinction. Cosmetics and animal-care products can now also apply, which has made it possible for all cosmetic products to apply, as defined under the EU Cosmetic Regulation.
These changes were introduced to avoid greenwashing, as a reported three out of four cosmetic products claiming environmental benefits, without a state sanctioned distinction. The EU Ecolabel promotes limited ecological impact, be it by low toxicity, less, easily recyclable packaging and sustainable sourcing, which has been accompanied by a ban on carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic to reproduction substances.
